Memory Verse: ” …To those who by persistence in doing good seek honour, and immortality he will give eternal life” (Rom.2:7)
Make no mistakes, beloved, it pays to do good. There is a sense of fulfillment; we sense inward satisfaction each time we engage in good deed. That is a sign that we are in the will of God. That’s what we were created for. “For we are God’s workmanship created in Christ Jesus to do good works which God prepared in advance for us to do” (Ephesians. 2:10) NIV.
No matter who we are, or have attained in life, this is the central purpose of our being. This is the major reason why we were created, and the cardinal essence of living. Our existence on earth will be unfulfilled if we are not living for this. The Bible talking about Jesus in Acts 10:38, says that he went about doing good, so should every one named after him as well.
I am not ignorant of the fact that it is not that easy to do good in this evil world where the devil is fighting us left and right to ensure that we operate in the contrary; a world where people hardly appreciate what good is done to them (2Tim. 3:2), instead pay back good with evil. (I personally have been a victim of this on many occasions). That is why the Bible says “…to those who by PERSISTENCE in doing…” So we are to persist, we are to keep at it in spite of all odds. Even when it seems like, or we feel like it is not worth it, we have no choice. It is God’s word, and we must obey it.
What will be the effect of doing good, or what will be our reward for doing good, in other words what do we stand to gain for doing good? Look at that verse seven again …”he we will give eternal life”. Is that all is in it for us doing good? No. Look at verse 10 also “But glory, honour,, and peace for every one who does good”. So apart from eternal life, we are promised glory, honour, and peace on this earth.
May Almighty God empower and equip us to persist in doing good in Jesus’ name. AMEN!
